League-Leading Mustangs Too Much To Handle For Women's Hoops In 89-72 Loss
1/25/2014 4:48:00 PM | Women's Basketball
San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team faced the Big West's leading team Saturday afternoon, Cal Poly, and the Mustangs proved why they're atop the league standings earning an 89-72 victory at Mott Gym (box score).
After trading buckets in the opening minutes of action, the Highlanders (4-15, 0-6) fell behind giving up 11 straight points as Cal Poly (11-8, 5-1) took a 15-4 lead. The Mustangs never looked back as their margin grew to as high as 22 late in the half.
CP was hitting a high percentage from the field--consistently above 50 percent the entire half--while the Highlanders struggled making just 25.7 percent of their shots.
In the second period, UC Riverside cut the lead to 16 on three occasions early in the half, but could not stop the Mustangs as they grew their lead to 28, 78-50, with 8:02 remaining in the game.
But the Highlanders made a push, using a 20-8 run to make it a 16-point game, 86-70, with under two minutes to go. That was as close as they would get, however, as time was on the side of Cal Poly in its win.
UC Riverside upped its shooting percentage in the second half, hitting 41 percent while outscoring the Mustangs, 46-44. The Highlanders defense forced 21 CP turnovers but were outshot for the game, 53 percent to 33.8 percent.
UCR's Simone DeCoud led all players with 20 points connecting on 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from the foul line. Annelise Ito added 13 points while Kiara Harewood, Akilah Martin, and Brittany Crain all had nine points apiece.
Ariana Elegado scored 18 points to lead Cal Poly while Jonae Ervin had 14 and Kristen Ale added 10.
Next up for UCR is a Thursday, January 30 home contest against Cal State Northridge beginning at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena.
