Davis, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team concluded its three-match road swing on Saturday evening with a 3-0 loss at UC Davis by the scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-20.
Ashley Cox led the Highlanders (2-14, 0-4) with 12 kills while Alex Gresham added five. Three different Aggies (8-9, 3-1) players recorded double-figure kills led by 11 from Allie Wegener.
UC Davis took an 8-7 lead early in the first set, but UC Riverside rallied to score three straight retaking the lead, 10-8, capped off by a Gresham kill. The Aggies countered, however, scoring five straight and seven of the next eight points to go up 15-11.
A kill by Bri Holmes put UCR back within three, 15-12, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way as UCD scored 10 of the final 12 points to win, 25-14.
In the second set, the Highlanders led 5-3 early before allowing seven straight UC Davis points as the margin became 10-5. The teams traded points until the Aggies turned a 12-8 advantage into a 17-8 lead, as they went on for the 25-17 victory.
The tides changed in the third set as UC Davis led early on, 11-8, but it was the Highlanders who tied it at 11 following two kills from Cox and a Maddie Hubbell service ace.
It was still a one-point set, 17-16, late in the frame when the Aggies used a 5-0 run to go up 22-16. UC Riverside countered scoring three unanswered to cut the margin to 22-19, but UCD scored three of the final four points to secure the win, 25-20.
The Highlanders now return home to host UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton on October 17 and 18 respectively at the SRC Arena in Riverside, CA.
