Volleyball Falls To UC Irvine In Straight Sets, 25-9, 27-25, 25-17

Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team returned home Friday evening following a three-match road swing, but dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting UC Irvine by the scores of 25-9, 27-25 and 25-17. Video Recap.
UCR (2-15, 0-5) had a balanced offensive attack as Bri Holmes and Alex Gresham each recorded eight kills, while Cristina Maietta added six. Cassidy Pickrell led the Anteaters (13-7, 3-3) with 13 kills.
The Highlanders led early in the first set, 4-3, following two Maietta kills and two UCI attack errors. The Anteaters rallied scoring the next seven straight points and 18 of 20 overall as the lead ballooned to 21-6. UCR stopped the rally with consecutive points on another 'Eaters error and a kill by Gresham, but a 4-1 run to close out the set gave UC Irvine the 25-9 victory.
Neither team led by more than three points the entire second set as there were 15 tie scores and eight lead changes throughout. The Highlanders went up by two, 22-20, late in the frame, but saw the Anteaters come back to tie it at 22. The teams traded points until UCI went up at set-point twice at 24-23 and 25-24, but each time UCR responded tying the set to keep it going.
Tied at 25, the 'Eaters took a 2-1 lead in the match following back-to-back kills by Victoria Dennis as they held on for the 27-25 win.
In was another close contest early in the third set with four tie scores through 4-4, but UCI scored three straight and eight of 10 as the lead grew to 12-6. UC Riverside cut it to five, but could get no closer the rest of the way as the Anteaters claimed the victory, 25-17.
The Highlanders remain at home on Saturday, October 18 hosting Cal State Fullerton for a 7 pm PT match at the SRC Arena.
