Volleyball Takes CSUN To Four Sets Before Falling, 3-1

Northridge, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team rebounded from a 25-17 first-set loss at CSUN Saturday evening to even out the match at 1-1 with a 29-27 win in the second set, but the Matadors (14-6, 5-3) were too much to handle in sets three and four claiming 25-15 and 25-14 victories to earn the 3-1 win.
Two members of the Highlanders (2-18, 0-8) recorded double-digit kills led by 13 from Alex Gresham and 11 from Bri Holmes, while Danetta Boykin had 15 kills to lead four Northridge players in double-figures.
CSUN went out to a 7-1 lead early in the first set, but UCR countered and eventually tied things at 14, capped off by a Gresham kill. The teams traded points until the Matadors turned a 16-16 tie into a 24-16 advantage following eight straight points.
A kill from Ashley Cox stopped the rally, making it 24-17, but a kill by the Matadors closed out the frame for the 25-17 win.
The second set was close with 11 tie scores and six lead changes, as UC Riverside prevailed down the stretch to tie the match at 1-1.
The Highlanders found themselves down 22-19 late, but rallied using a Megan Reza kill, a Gresham service ace, back-to-back Helena Peric kills, and an attack error by CSUN to retake the lead and go up at set-point, 24-22.
Northridge countered scoring three straight to take a 25-24 set-point advantage, and led at set-point twice more at 26-25 and 27-26. Each time, though, UCR had the answer to tie the set, and finally used three consecutive kills from Holmes to close out the frame for the victory, 29-27.
It was a one-point lead, 9-8, midway through the third set when Northridge scored five straight and eight of the next nine to open up a 17-9 margin. UC Riverside got as close as five on two occasions down the stretch, but could not muster a comeback as CSUN took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-15 victory.
The fourth set started similarly to the third as it was close early on, but Northridge again took control midway through turning a four-point advantage into a 23-11 lead. The Highlanders got two back quickly thanks to a Cox kill and an attacking error by the Matadors, but it wasn't enough as CSUN took home the 25-14 win.
UC Riverside now returns to the SRC Arena for a three-match homestand beginning on Thursday, October 30 with a 7 pm PT contest against Cal Poly.
