San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (2-14,0-3) took Cal Poly to four sets on Saturday before falling, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-19.
Ashley Cox recorded 22 kills to lead all players, while Megan Reza added 11 and Alex Gresham had eight. Three Mustangs (6-7, 1-2) players had double-digit kills led by 18 from Raeann Greisen.
In the first set, there were eight tie scores through 16-16 as both teams battled for control, but it was the Mustangs who gained it going up by four, 22-18, late. UCR scored three of the next four points to cut the lead in half, 23-21, but consecutive kills by CP sealed the first-set win, 25-21.
Tied at 12-12 in the second set, the Highlanders pushed ahead scoring four straight on two kills from Cox, one from Graham, and a Cal Poly error.
The teams traded points with the lead fluctuating between two and five points until UC Riverside went up at set-point, 24-21, following a kill from Reza. Back-to-back kills by the Mustangs made it a one-point set, 24-23, but UCR closed it out with another Cox kill as the match was tied at 1-1.
In the third set, there were 11 tie scores with the last one coming at 22-22 late in the frame. CP scored two to go up at set-point, 24-22, but a Reza kill made it 24-23 before a final Mustangs kill put them on top for good, 25-23.
Down 2-1 in the match, UC Riverside was locked in another tight battle in the fourth set, as it was tied at 17-17 late. A 4-0 run by Cal Poly extended the margin to 21-17, and although the Highlanders cut it to three, could not get any closer as the Mustangs held on for the fourth-set victory, 25-19.
UC Riverside remains on the road next weekend traveling to UC Davis on Saturday, October 11 for a 7 pm PT match in Davis, CA.
