Highlanders Drop Three-Set Match At UC Irvine, 25-19, 25-21 And 25-12

Irvine, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team lost a three-set match at UC Irvine on Thursday evening in Big West Conference action, falling by the scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-12.
The Anteaters jumped out to a 7-1 lead early in the first set and still led at 20-13 midway through. The Highlanders rallied utilizing back-to-back kills from Megan Reza and Ashley Cox combined with two UCI attack errors to cut the margin to three, 20-17.
Still down three a short while later, 21-18, UCR's comeback fell just shy as UC Irvine scored three straight and four of the final five points to hang on for the 25-19 victory.
The beginning of set two was a tight battle as neither team led by more than three points until the 'Eaters turned a 10-8 lead into a 13-8 advantage. From there, the margin stayed between three and six points until the Highlanders went on a 5-1 run to cut the gap to two, 22-20. Bri Holmes had two kills during the run while Cristina Maietta added one and Meg Graham had a solo block.
UC Irvine scored the next two straight to go up at set point, 24-20, but another Holmes kill kept UCR in contention. The Highlanders looked to continue their comeback trailing 24-21, but an untimely service error proved the difference maker as UCI came away with the 25-21 win.
UC Riverside led 4-3 early in the third set but gave up three straight points and seven overall as the Anteaters went up 10-5. From there, UCI's lead extended to 14-6 en route to a 25-12 victory.
Holmes led UCR with a match-high 12 kills while Cox added seven. Allison Lee recorded 11 kills to lead the 'Eaters.
The Highlanders remain on the road traveling to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, November 15 for a 7 pm PT match in Fullerton, CA.
