Albuquerque, NM—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team ran its record to 4-0 on the year, Friday evening, as they scored 14 of the first 16 points against Stephen F. Austin and never looked back cruising to a 90-62 victory. The Highlanders will square off Saturday against the winner of the New Mexico vs. Boston University game which tipped at 6 pm PT Friday.
Four different players scored during UCR's opening run, which lasted just under six minutes. Brittany Crain led the team with five points during the streak, and finished with a game-high 35 which moved her past Natasha Hadley (1,016) and Liz Lattimer (1,036) into 14th place on the Highlanders' career scoring chart.
The Lady Jacks (3-2) didn't connect on their first shot from the floor until Brentney Branch drained a three-pointer with 13:52 remaining in the first half. Brittney Matthew's lay up with 12:30 to go in the period gave Stephen F. Austin its second field goal of the game, but the third wouldn't come for more than three minutes, and by that time UC Riverside led by 17 points, 24-7.
The Highlanders pushed their lead to as many as 21 before the break, and entered the locker room with a 19-point lead, 45-26.
Crain led all scorers at intermission with 20 points, going eight for 12 from the field. As a team, the Highlanders connected on 62.1 percent of their field goals while forcing the Lady Jacks into 11 first-half turnovers.
UC Riverside extended its lead to 23 points early in the second half, but Annelise Ito and Simone DeCoud each picked up their third fouls early in the period to give Stephen F. Austin some hope. The Lady Jacks' offense began making its shots, connecting on six of its first nine from the field after the break to make it a 15-point game with 11:41 remaining.
That was as close as Stephen F. Austin would get the rest of the way, however, as the Highlanders scored 18 of the next 20 points to push the advantage to 31, 78-47. Crain had 11 points during the run to cross the 30-point plateau for the fifth time in her career. She added 12 rebounds on the night to post her second double-double of the season and ninth of her career.
As a team, the Highlanders made a program record 63.0 percent of their shots from the field including eight of 14 from three-point range. They held the Lady Jacks to 37.5 percent shooting, and Stephen Austin misfired on 15 of 21 shots from beyond the arc.
DeCoud and Ito joined Crain in double figures scoring 11 points each. Matthew paced the Lady Jacks with 16.
