Volleyball Takes First Set From #25 Hawai'i But Falls, Three Sets To One
11/29/2014 12:46:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
Honolulu, HI—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team made a little history Friday evening in Hawai'i as the Highlanders took the first set from the Rainbow Wahine, 25-19.
It was the first time the Highlanders (2-26, 0-14) have taken a set from Hawai'i since they joined the Big West Conference, and the first time UC Riverside won a set from a ranked opponent since they dropped a 3-1 decision at #19 Cal Poly back on November 16, 2007 (box score).
The first set saw 14 ties and seven lead changes, with neither team leading by more than two through the first 36 points of the match. Tied at 18, the Highlanders turned up the heat, going up one on a Meg Graham kill, and taking a two-point lead thanks to a Hawai'i attack error. A Bri Holmes kill put UCR up three, and forced Hawai'i to call time out.
The Rainbow Wahine (20-6, 12-3) scored the first point coming out of the break on a UC Riverside attack error, but the Highlanders got the serve back, and pushed their lead back to three, 22-19, on another Holmes kill. A block by Amanda Press and Kecie Ambers gave UCR a four-point cushion, and back-to-back kills by Holmes gave the Highlanders the set.
UC Riverside looked to go up two sets to none as the second set got underway, and halfway through, were tied at 13. Unfortunately, the Rainbow Wahine scored the next three points, and never trailed again, evening the match at one with the 25-19 win.
Hawai'i threatened to end the third set quickly going up 12-6, but the Highlanders wouldn't go quietly, and cut the deficit to two at 13-11. But that was as close as they would get as the Rainbow Wahine scored 12 of the final 15 points to go up two sets to one.
Hawaii closed out the match in the fourth as they never trailed, winning the first three points en route to a 25-14 final.
