Women's Basketball Hangs Tough At UCLA, But Bruins Prevail, 57-43

Los Angeles, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball led by 10 points at UCLA midway through the first half, but the Bruins were eventually able to wear down the Highlanders to secure the 57-42 victory.

The Highlanders controlled both ends of the floor in the early going taking an 18-8 lead midway through the first. UC Riverside connected on 66.7 percent of its field goal attempts over the first 10:32, while the Bruins misfired on 10 of their first 13 shots, committing five turnovers.

The fifth UCLA miscue sent Dynese Adams racing down the floor, but as she tried to come to a jump stop, her feet slid out from under her causing her to travel. Jordin Canada was giving chase, and she leaped to try and block Adams' shot, but she went sprawling over the 5-8 guard and landed awkwardly. Play was stopped for several minutes while the Bruins sports medicine staff tended to Canada, and they eventually carried her from the floor.

UCLA scored the next eight points after the injury to cut the UCR lead to two, and Annelise Ito picked up her third personal foul with 7:15 remaining. Inarra Nyingifa ended the Bruins run with a lay up, but UCLA scored the next five points to take their first lead since the first minute of the ballgame.

The Bruins scored six of the final eight points of the period to take a three-point lead, 28-25, into the locker room.

Crain and Adams led the Highlanders with eight points in the first 20 minutes of play. UC Riverside made 57.9 percent of its shots, but committed 13 turnovers in the period which contributed to the halftime deficit.

Nirra Fields led a balanced Bruins attack with six points as UCLA upped its shooting percentage to 52.2 percent for the period after its early struggles, making nine of 10 shots to close out the half.

A 6-0 UCLA run early in the second pushed the Bruins advantage to double digits, 40-30, and the UCR was never able to get much closer.

Although they kept their turnovers in check after the break, the Highlanders had difficulty solving the Bruins defense in the second, missing 24 of 30 shots, including 12 of 14 from three-point range.

Crain finished as the game's leading scorer with 14 points, while Fields paced the Bruins with 11.

The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend as they travel to LMU Saturday for a 7 pm PT tip against the Lions.
