Six Highlanders Post Multi-Hit Games In Season Opening, 10-2 Win Over San Francisco

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team banged out 16 hits Friday evening in a 10-2 season-opening victory over San Francisco at The Plex (box score).
Six different Highlanders recorded multi-hit games as the top six batters in the order went a combined 15 for 26 with nine runs scored and nine RBIs.
Jake Smigelski (1-0) got the start for UC Riverside, and he struggled in his initial inning of work as the first two batters reached on a single and a walk, but the senior settled down striking ou tthe next two hitters before a line out to third ended the threat.
The Highlanders' offense gave him a three-run cushion in the bottom of the first as the first five UC Riverside batters reached base. Francisco Tellez brought home the first run of the game with an RBI double to left, and Cody Hough drove in a pair with a single to right.
Smigelski retired the side in order in the second and the third, but in the fourth, a lead-off walk came back to hurt him as Bradley Zimmer stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and came home on a single to left by Derek Atkinson.
UCR got the run back and more in the bottom of the frame, as Tellez picked up his second RBI of the night with a double down the right field line that scored Joe Chavez. After Devyn Bolasky drew a walk, David Andriese singled to right to load the bases, and Hough picked up an RBI the hard way as he was hit by a pitch.
The Dons touched Smigelski for a run in the top of the sixth to make if 5-2 thanks in part to a hit batter, a walk and a wild pitch.
San Francisco replaced starter Abe Bobb at the beginning of the sixth, and the Highlanders banged out three consecutive one-out singles off of reliever Logan West to go back up by four, 6-2.
The Highlanders lifted Smigelski to start the seventh, and Dylan Stuart pitched the first of two scoreless innings of relief, before giving way to Donovan Gonzales who threw a scoreless ninth.
UC Riverside tacked on two runs in the bottom of the seventh by way of a Tellez RBI single and a run-scoring double by Andriese, and two in the eighth courtesy of a fielder's choice groundout by pinch-hitter Mark Contreras and an RBI groundout by Tellez.
