Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking for its first 2-0 start to a season sice the 2010 campaign, Sunday afternoon, but it was the San Francisco Dons coming away with 6-3 win to even the three-game, season-opening series at one game apiece (box score).
UC Riverside starter Ben Doucette (0-1) got off to a strong start striking out lead off hitter Mark Sinatro, but the next batter, Nico Giarratano, doubled off the base of the wall in left field, and one out later, a Zach Turner single up the middle made it 1-0 Dons.
San Francisco opened the top of the second with back-to-back singles by Bob Cruishank and Brendan Hendriks, and after a sac bunt moved both runners up 90 feet, a Harrison Bruce sac fly put the Dons up 2-0. A sharp infield single by Sinatro put San Francisco on top by three before Doucette retired the side.
The Highlanders offense bounced back in the bottom of the second touching Dons starter Ben Graff for a pair of runs. After the first two batters were retired, Nick Vilter laced a solo shot that just cleared the wall in left field. Graff walked the next batter, Matt Ellis, and Austin Roberts doubled down the right field line to pull UC Riverside to within one, 3-2.
A Joe Chavez infield single put runners on the corners, and San Francisco made the call to the bullpen bringing in Christian Cecilio. Cecilio got Francisco Tellez to ground out to third to end the threat.
The Dons got the run back in the top of the fourth as Doucette plunked Hendriks with one out, and put runners at first and third following a Ryan Matranga single through the right side of the infield. Two batters later, another Bruce sac fly put San Francisco back up by two.
The Highlanders played some small ball in the bottom of the fourth to pick up their third run of the game: Roberts reached on a one-out bunt single, and promptly stole second. A Chavez ground out allowed Roberts to go to third, and a Tellez' single to left brought Roberts plateward.
That was the final run UC Riverside would score. however, as Cecilio kept the Highlanders in check scattering five hits and three walks over 5.1 innings of work, allowing just the single run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Dons tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh for the final margin of victory. Brock Larson pitched the final two innings for San Francisco to earn his first save of the season.
The Highlanders and Dons play the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday, February 16 beginning at 1 pm PT.
