Career-Highs From DeCoud And Harewood Not Enough In 83-72 Defeat To Cal Poly

Riverside - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team saw career-highs in scoring from Simone DeCoud and Kiara Harewood on Saturday evening, but it was not enough as Cal Poly came away with the 83-72 victory in Big West Conference action. Box Score.
DeCoud's 27 points led all players, while Harewood added 18 and Brittany Crain chipped in with 14. Cal Poly's Molly Schlemer recorded a double-double of 20 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Mustangs, while Ariana Elegado added 18 points.
Both squads shot around 39 percent from the field in the first half, but it was the Mustangs who entered the half up 42-34. There were four tie scores in the first 15 minutes of action as neither team led by more than two possessions until the half time score.
In the second period, Cal Poly's lead quickly reached double-digits less than two and a half minutes into play, and reached 15, 60-45, with 14:41 to go.
The Highlanders scored the next six straight to cut the margin back to nine, 60-51, and again at 62-53 with 12:38 remaining.
The Mustangs converted a free throw on their next trip down the court, and the lead never dipped below 10 the rest of the way as CP had the win in hand.
For the game, Cal Poly shot 42.6 percent from the field including a 45.5 percent clip from three-point range. UC Riverside connected on 35.9 percent of its shots including a 44.4 percent mark from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs dominated the paint, 51 to 37, in large part to the 6-5 Schlemer, while also outscoring UCR in the paint, 30-16.
The Highlanders now have a bye game this coming Thursday, but return to action next Saturday, March 1 for a 4 pm PT tip at Cal State Northridge in Northridge, CA.
