Vilter Belts Pair, Drives In Six In 9-6 Victory At Bakersfield
3/1/2014 6:33:00 PM | Baseball
Bakersfield—Jake Smigelski scattered seven hits over 7.2 innings, and Nick Vilter crushed his fourth and fifth home runs of the season driving in six runs as the UC Riverside Baseball Team beat Bakersfield 9-6 Saturday afternoon (Box Score).
Smigelski (2-1) only allowed three base runners past first while striking out a career-high eight and walking none for his second victory of the season.
The Highlanders put runners on base in each of the first two innings, but didn't break into the scoring column until the top of the third. Joe Chavez singled to left and advanced to third on a Francisco Tellez single to right. Devyn Bolasky brought him home with a sac fly to put UC Riverside up 1-0. One out later, Cody Hough drew a walk, and Nick Vilter made it 4-0 Highlanders when he drilled his fourth home run of the season over the left field fence.
UCR tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Vilter connected on his second home run of the day. The last time a member of the Highlanders hit two home runs in the same game was back on May 19, 2012 when Phil Holinsworth hit a pair at Cal State Fullerton.
UC Riverside wasn't done, however, as they loaded the bases that same inning thanks to a pair of walks and a single off of Roadrunners starter Taylor Aikenhead. Tellez then drew a bases loaded walk scoring Thomas Walker with the team's sixth run of the day. Relief pitcher Alec Daily came in and got Devyn Bolasky to ground out to first to end the threat.
The Highlanders scored again in the seventh thanks to a Chavez sac fly, and two more in the eighth as Vilter collected his fifth and sixth RBIs of the day on a single to left. The last player to drive in six runs in a game for UC Riverside was Vilter's teammate David Andriese who knocked in a half dozen vs UNLV on Apri 18, 2012.
As it turned out, the Highlanders would need those extra runs, as the Runners touched relief pitcher Donovan Gonzales for four hits, two walks and six runs in the bottom of the ninth. Gabe Genter got the final two outs to nail down the win.
The Highlanders and Runners complete their three-game series with a Sunday double header scheduled to begin at noon PT.
