Tellez Bangs Out Four Hits, Drives In Three In 11-6 Win Over Gonzaga

Both teams hit their respective bullpens heavily following a busy weekend. Dylan Stuart got his first start of the 2014 season after seven relief appearances, and he gave up a lead-off double to Mitch Gunsolus before retiring the next three batters to get out of the inning.
The Highlanders staked him to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Joe Chavez drew a walk off of Bulldogs starter Will Abram, and stole his ninth base of the season on a failed pick off attempt. Tellez moved him to third on a single to center, and Devyn Bolasky brought him home with a sacrifice fly to right.
Nick Vilter, whose eight home runs lead the nation, drew a walk, and David Andriese was hit by a pitch loading the bases with just one out. Abram struck out Thomas Walker, and got Matt Ellis to fly out to right field to end the threat.
Gonzaga put two runs on the board in the top of the second, stringing together a walk, two singles, a sac bunt and a sac fly.
UCR stranded two runners in the bottom of the second, but in the third, they batted around sending 10 batters to the plate. When the dust settled, it was 6-2 Highlanders.
Jordan Kron (1-3) came on in relief of Stuart in the third, and faced the minimum three batters, but he gave up a one-out walk to Taylor Jones in the fourth. Jones moved to second on a passed ball, and to third on a fly ball to right field. Sam Brown then singled up the middle slicing the UC Riverside advantage to three.
It remained 6-3 Highlanders, until the bottom of the sixth. David Bigelow, who was the Bulldogs fourth pitcher of the day, gave up a solo shot to Andriese to lead off the sixth. Pinch-hitter Drake Zarate then drew a four-pitch walk, but he was erased on an Ellis double play grounder.
Cody Hough then worked another four-pitch base on balls, and Austin Roberts singled through the left side. Chavez followed with a single up the middle making it 8-3 UC Riverside, and Tellez's single to center put the Highlanders on top by six.
The Bulldogs mounted a threat in the top of the eighth off of a pair of UCR relievers. Angelo Lingos recorded the first two outs of the inning, but plunked back-to-back batters to put runners on first and second. Brown then singled to center, and Bolasky bobbled the ball in center allowing Jones to score. Jimmy Sinatro then singled to center scoring Cabe Reiten ending Lingos' day.
Joie Dunyon took over for Lingos, walking Gunsolus on four pitches. Caleb Wood then hit a ball back up the box that bounced off of Dunyon's foot towards short. There wasn't enough time for Roberts to make a play, however, and Brown scored to cut the lead to 9-6. After a visit to the mound by pitching coach Bobby Applegate, Dunyon got Beau Bozett to hit a fly ball to left to end the inning.
The Highlanders bounced back immediately in their half of the eighth with a two-out rally of their own. Roberts got things starred with a single to center, scoring on a Chavex double to right center. Tellez then drove in his third run of the game with a single to right.
Kevin Sprague retired the Bulldogs in order in the top of the ninth to close out the victory.
The Highlanders are off until the weekend when they host Stony Brook for a three-game series at The Plex. Game times are scheduled for 6 pm PT Friday and Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
