Baseball Takes Rubber Match With 11-3 Victory Over Visiting Stony Brook

For the third straight game, the Highlanders fell behind as Kevin Krause clubbed his second home run of the series in the top of the first to put the Seawolves up 1-0.
UC Riverside got that run back in the bottom of the inning, however, as Joe Chavez led off the frame with an infield single to short, and Francisco Tellez laced a double to right center moving Chavez to third. Devyn Bolasky's grounder to second was deep enough to score Chavez and tie the game.
Stony Brook put runners on base in each of the next four innings off of UCR starter Ben Doucette (1-2), but all five were left stranded as the Highlanders made all the right plays when it counted.
In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Vilter helped put UC Riverside on top, beating out a one-out bunt for a base hit, stealing second, moving to third on an infield single off the bat of Drake Zarate, and scoring on a Robby Witt single to left.
The Highlanders tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth as Seawolves starter Ryley MacEachern (1-1) lost some of his command. Austin Roberts drew a lead-off walk, and one batter later Tellez did likewise. A Bolasky fielder's choice put runners at the corners, and then UC Riverside executed a perfect double steal to go up 3-1.
But the Highlanders really broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth off of Seawolves relievers Josh Barry and Chad Lee, scoring four runs on three hits and a Stony Brook error. UCR added two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to lead 11-1.
The Seawolves put together one final rally in the top of the ninth, plating two runs, but Cody Rogina came on with two outs in the frame and got Kevin Courtney to fly out to center to end the game.
The Highlanders are off this week for finals. UC Riverside's next game is against San Diego at The Plex on Tuesday, March 25 at 6 pm PT.
