Irvine, CA--UC Riverside starter Ben Doucette allowed just five hits in eight innings as the Highlanders picked up their first conference win of the season in a 3-1 victory over UC Irvine (box score).
UC Riverside (12-12, 1-2) dropped the first two games of the weekend series with the Anteaters and needed a win Sunday to avoid a sweep. Doucette kept the 'Eaters in check the entire evening giving up just one hit through the first four innings.
The Highlanders gave Doucette a two-run lead to work with in the top of the second. David Andriese started off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by shortstop Taylor Sparks. One batter later, Thomas Walker doubled down the left field line which moved Andriese to third. UCR loaded the bases after Drake Zarate was hit by a pitch, and Cody Hough's single to left plating Andriese. Walker scored on the play as the ball got away from left fielder Adam Alcantara, to put the Highlanders up 2-0.
Zarate and Hough added to the UC Riverside lead in the top of the fourth when Zarate drew a two-out walk, and Hough's double to left center drove him home.
In the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, UC Irvine put runners on base, but only one of them made their way into scoring position, and he was stranded at second.
Doucette (2-2) retired the side in order in the eighth, and started the ninth looking for the complete game shutout. He issued a lead-off walk to Chris Rabago, though, and Connor Spencer followed with a double down the right field line sending Rabago to third.
That caused Head Coach Doug Smith to make the call to the bullpen bringing in Kevin Sprague. Sprague got Sparks to fly out before walking Jerry McClanahan to load the bases. A passed ball got the Anteaters on the board, but Sprague retired the final two batters for his third save of the season.
The Highlanders return to the friendly confines of The Plex this weekend for a three-game series against Cal State Northridge.
