Eugene, OR—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was trying to avoid a sweep Sunday afternoon at the hands of 12th-ranked Oregon, but the Ducks erased a 3-1 Highlanders' lead and held on for 6-5 victory (Box Score).
The Highlanders (14-17) fell behind early for the third straight game as Michael Tolman's single with two outs in the first scored Aaron Payne.
Ben Doucette settled down after that allowing just two hits over the next four innings. Meanwhile, the UC Riverside offense gave the Highlanders their first lead of the series in the top of the fourth. David Andriese was hit by a pitch with two outs in the inning, and Matt Ellis doubled to left center moving Andriese to third. Drake Zarate followed with a single to left scoring Andriese and Ellis.
UCR went up 3-1 the next inning as Joe Chavez led off the frame with a double to left center, moved to third on a sac bunt, and scored on a Francisco Tellez sac fly.
Doucette appeared to run out of gas in the bottom of the sixth Tyler Bumgartner led off the inning with a solo shot to right, and Tolman doubled to left. Doucette recorded the next two outs, before walking Austin Grabeck to put runners on first and third. The Ducks (27-10) sent up pinch hitter J.B. Bryant and Head Coach Doug Smith made the call to the bullpen bringing in Joie Dunyon. Bryant greeted Dunyon with a single to left scoring Tolman and tying the score.
Angel Landazuri (2-1) took over for Dunyon in the bottom of the seventh, and he recorded the first out on a grounder to first. But the next batter, Baumgartner, double to right, and Landazuri plunked Tolman putting runners at first and second. Kyle Garlick then doubled to right center scoring both runners. Garlick advanced to second on the throw home, and scored on Shaun Chase's sac bunt to make it 6-3 Oregon.
The Highlanders weren't done, though as they took aim at closer Jake Reed in the top of the ninth. Cody Hough and Chavez each grounded out, but Devyn Bolasky singled to left, and Tellez drilled a homer over the fence in right center to slice the Ducks' lead to one. But Nick Vilter grounded out to second to end the game.
UC Riverside remains on the road this week traveling to San Diego State, Tuesday, for a 6 pm first pitch against the Aztecs. They then return home over the weekend to host UC Davis for a three-game Big West Conference series.
