Santa Barbara, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team bounced back Sunday with a 7-3 victory over UC Santa Barbara remaining in a tie for third place with Long Beach State (Box Score).
The Highlanders jumped all over Gauchos starter Shane Bieber (2-2) in the first inning as Joe Chavez singled through the left side, and Devyn Bolasky and Francisco Tellez drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Nick Vilter's ground out to third scored Chavez, and David Andriese doubled down the left field line to plate two more. After a Thomas Walker ground out moved Andriese to third, Drake Zarate singled to give UC Riverside starter Ben Doucette a four-run cushion.
UC Santa Barbara (26-11, 7-8) got one back in the botom of the first without the benefit of a base hit. Woody Woodward was hit by a pitch, and one batter later he stole second. Matt Ellis' throw was off the mark, and Woodward advanced to third on the error. Joey Epperson's ground out to short scored Woodward cutting the lead to three, 4-1.
Bieber settled down after his troublesome first facing the minimum 12 batters over the next four innings. The Gauchos helped him out by closing the gap with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Scott Quinlan opened the inning with a triple to right. Cameron Newell then lifted a fly ball to right that scored Quinlan for Santa Barbara's second run of the day. Devon Gradford drew a four-pitch walk, and Jackson Morrow singled through the left side. Woodward's single to right plated Gradford, slicing the Highlanders advantage to one, 4-3.
UC Riverside (18-21, 7-5) finally got to Bieber again in the top of the sixth. Tellez led off the frame with a single to left, and Vilter was hit by a pitch. The Gauchos brought Greg Mahle in from the bullpen, but he didn't fare much better. David Andriese laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Robby Nesovic couldn't handle it, and Tellez came around to score. Walker drew a walk to load the bases, and Zarate's double play grounder made it 6-3 Highlanders.
UCR tacked on another run in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with one out. Ellis singled to left scoring Vilter for the Highlanders seventh run of the day.
Dylan Stuart (2-0) pitched the final 5.2 innings for UC Riverside allowing just two hits and walk to secure the win.
The Highlanders return home this week as they host UNLV Tuesday with first pitch slated for 3 pm PT.
