Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team banged out 11 hits Tuesday en route to an 8-2 victory over 27th-ranked UNLV. The Highlanders now carry a two-game winning streak into their three-game, Big West Conference series against nationally-ranked Cal Poly (#3) which begins Friday at 6 p at The Plex.
UCR pitchers Angel Landazuri and Cody Rogina came through with two of the best performance of their collegiate careers against the Rebels. Landazuri (3-2) was making his second start of the season, and he scattered five hits over his three innings of work.
He got some help from his defense in the top of the second as UNLV (28-16) put runners on first and second with just one out, but he induced a grounder to short off the bat of Edgar Montes. Nick Vilter fired home in plenty of time to nail Patrick Armstrong who tried to score on the play.
The UC Riverside (19-21) offense staked Landazuri to all the runs he would need in the bottom of the second as they sent 12 runners to the plate. Thomas Walker got things started with a one-out double down the right field line. Rebels starter Kenny Oakley (3-4) then plunked Drake Zarate with a pitch. Matt Ellis hit a grounder to third that he beat out, and all three runners advanced 90 feet when TJ White's throw sailed wide of first.
Cody Hough followed with a single to right plating two to make it 3-0 UCR. One batter later, Devyn Bolasky singled through the left side moving Hough to second, and Francisco Tellez walked to load the bases. Vilter then drew a walk to put the Highlanders up 4-0. David Andriese reached on another Rebels defensive miscue that scored two to make it 6-0 UC Riverside.
Landazuri got out of a no-out, runners-on-first-and-second jam in the top of the third, and then turned the game over to Cody Rogina. It was the first appearance for Rogina in 18 days, and just his fifth of the season. Coming into the game, he had logged just 1.2 innings, but had yet to allow an earned run. He kept that slate clean Tuesday by allowing just two hits over four innings and striking out a career-high four batters.
The Highlanders tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth off of UNLV reliever Matt Thomas. The first four batters—Andriese, Walker, Zarate and Ellis—all singled to give UC Riverside an eight-run lead.
The Rebels got on the board in the top of the eighth off of Jordan Kron. TJ White doubled to left center and moved to third on an Armstrong ground out. Erik VanMeetren then doubled down the left field line scoring White, and Morgan Stotts doubled to an almost identical location scoring VanMeetren.
Joie Dunyon pitched a scoreless ninth for the Highlanders to nail down the win.
