Baseball Can't Complete Sweep of Matadors, Falls 7-1 To Cal State Northridge
4/6/2014 4:56:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking to complete a three-game sweep of Cal State Northridge Sunday, but UCR's bats went silent, amassing just six hits in a 7-1 loss to the Matadors (Box Score).
Jordan Johnson was supposed to get the starting nod for CSUN (13-18, 2-4), but he was scratched late Saturday evening. His replacement, John Salas, turned in an All-Star performance scattering six hits over seven-and-a-third innings.
Highlanders' starter Ben Doucette struggled early as the Matadors touched him for three runs in the first, one in the second, and two in the third. He was lifted after recording just seven outs and replaced by Angel Landuzuri. Landuzuri pitched one-and-a third innings giving up one run, before Dylan Stuart came in and silenced the CSUN bats.
Joie Dunyon, Jordan Kron and Donovan Gonzales also kept the Matadors in check, but it was all for naught, as the Highlanders (14-13, 3-3) picked up just four hits off of Salas through the first six innings of play.
UCR finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, as Shuyo Chang doubled to open the inning, advanced to third on a ground out by Cody Hough, and scored one batter later on Joe Chavez's triple to right center.
The Highlanders are on the road this week traveling south Tuesday for a 6 pm PT first pitch at San Diego State. They then head north for a three-game weekend series at Oregon.
