Drake Zarate Named Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week

Irvine, CA—The Big West announced today that UC Riverside's Drake Zarate is the conference field player of the week for games played from May 5-11. The junior hit .417 over the weekend with a .462 on base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage, as the Highlanders took two of three on the road at Cal State Fullerton.
Zarate drove in the game-winning run in both victories over the Titans. On Friday, it was Zarate's sacrifice bunt that gave the Highlander a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish going on to defeat Fullerton, 3-2 (box score/recap). On Sunday, he powered UC Riverside to a 5-0 lead thanks to the first home run of his career—a grand slam in the first inning (listen to Ghizal Hasan's call of the homer). The game would go into extra innings, but Zarate drove home what would prove to be the winning run in the top of the 11th with a single to left (listen to Ghizal Hasan's call of the game-winning hit/box score/recap).
The Highlanders host Loyola Marymount this Tuesday at 6 pm PT in the first of five straight home games at The Plex.
