Riverside—UC Riverside scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to turn a one-run deficit into a five-run lead en route to a 9-6 victory over visiting Loyola Marymount Tuesday evening.
The Lions (28-21) led off the game with back-to-back singles, and then elected to sacrifice bunt with number three hitter Tanner Donnels. Donnels was unable to get the bunt down successfully, as he popped up to the pitcher for the first out of the game. Clean up hitter Cole Trezek then hit a tailor-made double play grounder to Joe Chavez at second, but Chavez was unable to come up with the ball and Austin Miller came around to score from second.
That put runners on first and third, and Jimmy Jack lifted a sac fly to center that scored David Fletcher with the Lions second run of the inning. Trezek tried to advance to second on the play, but he was thrown out by Bolasky to end the inning.
The Highlanders (23-24) got one run back in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a base hit. Lions starter Carlos Fuentes plunked Chavez to start the inning, and Chavez promptly stole second. Bolasky then drew a walk, and after Thomas Walker struck out, Chavez and Bolasky executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. David Andriese lifted a fly ball to center to cut the LMU lead in half.
UC Riverside gave the run right back in the top of the second, though, as the Highlanders defense let them down again. UCR starter Angel Landazuri walked David Edwards to start things off, and an errant pick off attempt rolled into the bullpen down the right field line allowing Edwards to scamper to third. Tommy Cheeks then grounded out to short to put Loyola Marymount back up by two, 3-1.
UCR cut the Lions advantage to one again in the bottom of the third as Walker led off the inning with a double to right center, and came home on a Francisco Tellez single up the middle (listen to Ghizal Hasan's call).
Cody Rogina took over for Landazuri after two innings, and he allowed just one hit over his three innings of work to keep LMU in check.
The Highlanders made Rogina the pitcher of record and put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth as they scored six runs on four hits and a Lions' error. Bolasky (listen), Walker (listen) and Tellez (listen) each drove in a pair during the rally.
Loyola Marymount scratched out another run in the top of the sixth, but Nick Vilter answered with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth (listen).
Neither team scored over the next two innings, but the Lions had one last rally in them. UCR closer Kevin Sprague took over in the top of the ninth, and he gave up three straight base hits as LMU closed to within three, but he struck out the next three batters to finish off the win (listen).
The Highlanders remain at home this weekend to take on Long Beach State in a three-game Big West Conference series.
