#3 Cal Poly Takes Rubber Match From UC Riverside Baseball, 7-2
5/4/2014 5:35:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—UC Riverside and #3 Cal Poly split the first two games of their three-game Big West Conference Baseball series over the weekend, and both clubs had their sights set on taking the Sunday's rubber match, but it was the Mustangs who came up with the 7-2 victory (Box Score).
Both Cal Poly starters from Friday and Saturday were unable to get out of the fourth inning, but Casey Bloomquist (10-1) stemmed that tide scattering nine hits and three walks over six innings of play. He allowed single runs in the second and the fifth, but by then the Mustangs offense had staked him to a 5-2 lead.
Bloomquist would bend but not break throughout the afternoon as the Highlanders (20-23, 8-7) put runners on in each of his six innings of work. But the Mustangs defense made enough plays behind him forcing UC Riverside to strand nine runners on the day.
All nine batters in Cal Poly's (38-9, 14-4) starting lineup had at least one hit in the game. UC Riverside starter Ben Doucette allowed 10 base knocks and five runs in his 5.2 innings of work. Angel Landazuri took over in the sixth, and the Mustangs scored insurance runs off of him in the seventh and ninth.
Brian Mundell scored four runs on the day for the Mustangs, while Chris Hoo and Peter Van Gansen drove in a pair each. David Andriese scored both of the Highlanders runs, while Francisco Tellez drove him in both times.
The Highlanders don't have a mid-week game this week, and they travel to Cal State Fullerton this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series.
