Las Vegas, NV - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team continued its season-opening weekend Saturday with a 3-1 loss to UNLV at the UNLV Invitational. The Rebels took the first set with a 25-21 win before the Highlanders earned a 26-24 victory to tie the match at 1-1. UNLV then went on for a 25-21 third-set win, and closed it out with a 25-15 fourth-set victory. Box Score.
Two UC Riverside players recorded double-digit kills led by 15 from Tyler Dorsey and 13 from Fabiana Rosas. Libero Maddie Hubbell had 18 digs to lead all players.
With 12 tie scores and six lead changes in the first set, neither team took control until late in the frame. It was just a one-point game, 22-21, following a Dorsey kill when the Rebels used a kill, a block, and a UCR attack error to score three in a row to claim the victory.
The Highlanders bounced back in the second set quickly going out to a 3-0 lead following kills by Rosas, Ashley Cox and a Rosas service ace. The Rebels would go on to tie the set at three, but UCR scored the next point and never lost its lead.
UNLV tied the set three more times before UC Riverside went up by four, 12-8. The Rebels rallied and tied it again late, 19-19, but the Highlanders scored four straight to open up a 23-19 advantage.
UCR then took a set-point lead, 24-22, but consecutive blocks by the Rebels again tied it. UC Riverside countered with a Cox kill making it 25-24, and a Dorsey kill put the nail in the coffin as the Highlanders tied the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 win.
In the third set, UCR rallied back from an 8-4 deficit to tie the set at 13. The teams traded points until UNLV scored four of the next six points to go up 20-16, as they held on for the 25-21 win taking a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Needing a fourth-set win to keep the match alive, the Highlanders battled early in the frame with six tie scores through 8-8. A few rallies later it was 11-10, but UCR could not stop a Rebels run as an 8-1 burst opened the set at 19-11.
UC Riverside was unable to recover at that point, and UNLV earned a 25-15 fourth-set win to claim the match victory.
These teams will play one another on Sunday at noon to conclude action at the UNLV Invitational.
