Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team was looking for its third straight win, and fifth in six matches Monday as they hosted the Pacific Tigers, but the visitors scored two goals in the first period and tacked on a third in the second to pick up the 3-0 shutout victory (box score).
The Tigers (4-9-2, 3-2-1) outshot the Highlanders 13-8 in the first 45 minutes of play, but didn't find the back of the net until the 38th minute as Shannon Johns' 30-yard shot from the left side found its way past the UC Riverside defenses.
Kelsey Nagel made it 2-0 Pacific with just under three minutes before halftime as she headed a Johns' cross over the outstretched arms of Highlanders goalkeeper Tawny Poggio.
The Highlanders (9-5-2, 3-2-1) turned up the pressure on the offensive end in the second period, but Tigers keeper Laura Guerin kept the net clean recording nine saves. Poggio recorded 11 saves on the day, but couldn't stop Carmen Padilla's shot with five minutes to go in the match, which provided Pacific with its final margin of victory.
The loss dropped UC Riverside into a tie with the Tigers in the race for the Big West Conference regular season championship. The Highlanders hit the road for their next two matches traveling to Idaho on October 24, and Utah State on October 26.
