Irvine, CA—The Big West today named UC Riverside guard/forward Kyle Austin its conference Player of the Week for games played from December 15-21.
The sophomore made his season debut at Loyola Marymount on December 15 and paced the Highlanders in scoring (20) and rebounding (7) while leading UCR to a 59-52 victory (box score/recap). He followed that up three days later with an 18-point, five rebound effort in a 58-53 win over Montana (box score/recap) that improved the Highlanders' record to 7-2—by far the best nine-game start to a season for UC Riverside since making the transition to Division I for the 2001-02 season.
For the week, Austin averaged 19 points and six rebounds while making 15 of 33 shots from the floor and committing just two turnovers.
Austin sat out the first six games of the season due to NCAA transfer rules.
Teammate Javon Borum won the Big West Conference Player of the Week Award on November 24 of this year (story).
