Volleyball Battles Utah Valley To Five Sets Before Falling, 3-2
9/20/2014 1:40:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Orem, UT - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team played its second match in the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational on Saturday, and for the second straight contest, the Highlanders lost in a five-set battle. Utah Valley (4-9) won the first set 25-14 before UCR (2-9) rallied for a 26-24 win in the second, and a 25-17 third-set victory to go up 2-1 in the match. The Wolverines countered with a 25-18 fourth-set win, and came from behind for the 15-13 victory in the fifth to seal the match.
The teams traded points early in the first set with six tie scores through the first six points. UVU started pulling away in the middle of the frame, taking a 15-12 lead and extending it to 23-12 after scoring eight consecutive.
A Fabiana Rosas kill stopped the bleeding, but the Highlanders deficit was just too much to come back from, as the Wolverines earned the 25-14 win.
UC Riverside was down 15-13 in the second set before scoring six of the next seven points to go up 19-16. Maddie Hubbell and Sarah Bruchet both had service aces during the rally, while Rosas and Alex Gresham added kills.
It looked as if UCR had the set in the bag, leading 24-21, but Utah Valley scored three straight to tie it at 24. The Highlanders countered, utilizing back-to-back kills from Rosas to secure the 26-24 victory, and tie the match at 1-1.
The third set started similarly to the first, with six ties through 8-8. This time, though, it was UC Riverside who took control, opening up a seven-point lead, 21-14, en route to a 25-17 win.
That put the Highlanders in the driver's seat leading 2-1 in the match, but like Friday's contest against Portland, UCR could not close out the contest.
Utah Valley went out to an early 9-1 lead in the fourth set, and still led by eight, 20-12, towards the end. UC Riverside made a push, outscoring UVU 6-2 to close the gap to 22-18, but it was not enough as the Wolverines held on for the 25-18 win.
In the fifth, Utah Valley led 7-2 before the Highlanders rallied, eventually tying the set at nine before going up 13-12. That forced a Wolverines timeout, and whatever was said in the huddle proved effective as three straight points closed out the match in favor of UVU.
Gresham led the Highlanders with 16 kills, while Bri Holmes added 15, Megan Reza had 12, and Rosas had 11.
UC Riverside concludes action at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational with a 3:30 pm PT match against Idaho State on Saturday.
