Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team got back on the winning track Friday evening with a 2-0 victory over visiting Duquesne (video recap).
Celina Valencia put the Highlanders (5-2-2) up 1-0 in the fifth minute as she beat four Dukes defenders to score from 23 yards out. Driving left to right across the Duquesne box. the senior drilled her shot into the right side of the net for her third score of the season.
Moments later the Dukes (3-4-2) had the tying goal in their sites when a foul in their box gave Maddie Layman a penalty kick. Elizabeth Silas guessed right, dove right, and stopped the shot cold to preserve the shutout.
It remained a 1-0 match until the 68th minute when Alexa Bustamante corraled the rebound of a blocked Sammy Arellano shot, and after a quick move, blasted the ball past the Duquesne keeper for the final margin of victory.
The Highlanders hit the road this weekend traveling to Lubbock, Texas where they will take on the number six team in the nation Sunday, Texas Tech. Kick off is slate for 11 am PT.
