Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team opened Big West Conference play Saturday evening with a 3-0 loss to No. 25 Hawai'i at the SRC Arena. After a first-set 25-12 win by the 'Bows (10-3, 2-0), the Highlanders (2-11, 0-1) put up an immense fight and almost came away with an upset, but fell 29-27 in the second set, and 25-19 in the third. Recap Video.
Fabiana Rosas led UCR with 12 kills while Alex Gresham and Megan Reza each added eight. Kalei Greeley and Tai Manu-Olevao both had 12 kills to lead UH.
In the first set, the teams battled for control throughout the first few plays as there were four ties through 4-4. The Highlanders had the early lead at 4-3, but the Rainbow Wahine rallied scoring four straight to go up 7-4.
It was still a three-point game, 11-8, midway through when Hawai'i scored six of the next eight points to open up the set, 17-10. UCR scored two of the next three points, but the 'Bows went on another tear, concluding the set on a 7-0 run to win 25-12.
UC Riverside rebounded in the second set and stayed closed with the nationally ranked Wahine, with 14 tie scores and three lead changes throughout. Tied at 7-7 early in the set, the Highlanders scored four consecutive off kills from Rosas and Reza and a pair of UH errors to lead 11-7. They still led by four, 13-9, a few points later when Hawai'i went on a 4-0 run of its own to tie the set at 13.
The score stayed within three over the next 10 points until UCR found itself up two, 23-21, late in the frame. The Rainbow Wahine countered, capitalizing on two UCR errors and a kill of their own to retake the lead and go up at set-point, 24-23. Meg Graham secured a kill for the Highlanders to tie the set at 24, but Hawai'i responded with a kill to go up at set-point for the second time, 25-24. UC Riverside again tied it at 25, and the scenario repeated itself twice more as UH went up at set-point at 26 and 27, but each time the Highlanders tied it to prolong the set.
Tied at 27-27, Hawai'i got the go-ahead on a kill from Kalei Adolpho, 28-27, and closed out the set with a kill from Manu-Olevao to secure the win, 29-27.
The third set was another nail-biter with nine ties and two lead changes. Similar to the second set, the Highlanders had a three-point advantage midway through, 11-8, but saw UH scored four unanswered to go up 12-11. An attack error by the Rainbow Wahine stopped the run, and the teams traded points with four more ties through 16-16.
Hawai'i then scored five of the next six points to take a 21-17 advantage, and held on for the 25-19 victory.
UC Riverside next returns to action on the road traveling to UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on October 3 and 4 respectively.
