Holmes' 17 Kills Propel Volleyball To First Win Of Year, 3-1, Over Maryland-Eastern Shore
9/5/2014 11:43:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
Cedar City, UT—Bri Holmes recorded 17 kills Friday morning to lead the UC Riverside Volleyball Team to its first win of the 2014 season, downing Maryland-Eastern Shore in four sets to open play at the Southern Utah Tournament. The Highlanders (1-3) cruised to a 25-13 first-set win before the Hawks (1-4) tied things at 1-1 with a 25-16 second-set victory. UCR countered in the next two sets, though, claiming 25-18 and 25-17 wins to secure the match. Box Score.
Holmes' 17 kills led all players on the day, and was only one shy of her career-high of 18 set last season. Alex Gresham added a career-high 10 kills while Maddie Hubbell had a career-best 25 digs to lead all players.
In the first set, the Highlanders turned a 6-5 lead into an 11-5 advantage following five straight points on three Holmes kills and two UCR blocks. UC Riverside extended its margin with another run, this time scoring seven consecutive to build a 22-10 lead. Ashley Cox served for six of those points and had one service ace and one kill, while Holmes and Gresham also added kills during the rally.
The Highlanders hit .258 during the first set while limiting the Hawks to .000 as the blue and gold cruised to their 25-13 victory.
The second set saw the tables turn as Maryland-Eastern Shore used a run midway through the frame to secure the win. Down one, 14-13, the Highlanders allowed seven straight points from the Hawks as the lead grew to 21-13.
UC Riverside could not rally back from that point as UMES tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 victory, outhitting the Highlanders .355 to .138.
UCR trailed 6-5 early in the third set, but saw its offense explode outscoring the Hawks 10-0 to take a 15-6 lead. Hubbell served throughout the rally and posted two service aces, while Holmes added two kills and the team recorded two more blocks.
Maryland-Eastern Shore stopped the run and promptly scored four straight, but UC Riverside countered with three of its own as the lead became 18-10. The Highlanders closed out the set on another kill from Holmes to go up 2-1 in the match with a 25-18 third-set win.
In the fourth set, UC Riverside led wire-to-wire as the closest the Hawks got was within two on two occasions, the last at 15-13 midway through. From that point, however, the Highlanders rallied for four straight on kills from Helena Peric, Gresham, and Fabiana Rosas, and an error from UMES.
That run was part of a larger rally for UCR as they ended up outscoring Maryland-Eastern Shore 9-1 en route to the 25-17 win.
The win is the first for the Highlanders since a five-set victory over Cal Poly on November 22, 2013.
UC Riverside continues action at the Southern Utah Tournament facing the host Thunderbirds on Friday, September 5 at 6 pm PT.
