Women's Soccer Upends Northern Iowa, 3-0, One Day After Monsoon Postpones Match
9/8/2014 11:55:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside and Northern Iowa Women's Soccer Teams played through on-again, off-again rain Monday morning, but they were spared the deluge that tore through the Inland Empire Sunday afternoon, and the Highlanders emerged with a 3-0 victory.
Sunday's match began innocently enough, but at the half, the skies opened up (view video highlights). After about 20 minutes of play, the teams were pulled from the pitch with the score tied, 0-0. After a half hour delay, the field was deemed unplayable, and the teams regrouped for a Monday morning kick off.
The Highlanders (3-1-1) controlled the play in both matches, but on Monday, they capitalized on their opportunities. With 6:32 gone in the match, Blanca Barrio centered the ball, and Celina Valencia's flick found Kelly Velasquez four yards out for her first goal of the season.
UC Riverside made it 2-0 with 3:09 to go before halftime as Alexa Bustamante's shot from close range was saved by Panthers' keeper Whitney Blunt, but Elizabeth Browne was there for the stick back recording her first score as a member of the Highlanders.
The final score of the day came in the 78th minute as Jade Vehawn dropped the ball into the right corner for Tyler Cunningham, who centered it towards the Northern Iowa (1-4-1) goal. Barrio was there to punch home her first score of the year, giving the Highlanders their final margin of victory.
UC Riverside remains at home this Friday, September 12 as the Highlanders host Bakersfield for a 7 pm PT kick off.
