Women's Basketball Overtakes CSUN, 68-56

Box Score Northridge- The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team lifted its Big West record above .500 to 4-3, notching a statement win over CSUN Thursday evening, 56-68.

After the Matadors jumped out to a nine-point lead with 6:30 left in the first half, the Highlanders went to work, battling back with a 12-0 run to take the lead 32-29. UCR would hold CSUN scoreless for the next five minutes until two made free-throws by the Matadors with a minute remaining. A last second foul before the half by UC Riverside would bring CSUN within three, 35-32 at halftime.

The second-ranked team in the conference would not hold a lead for the rest of the game as the Highlanders dominated on offense the remaining 20 minutes. Junior Brittany Crain led the Highlanders with 29 points,moving her double-figure scoring streak to 30 games. Crain now has 1,439 points in her career, making her fourth on the all-time list at UCR, passing assistant coach Seyram Bell, who previously held the record with 1,426 points.

Although starting the game one for six from the field, Annelise Ito came out strong in the second half, ending the game the second-leading scorer with 16 points. She and Crain tied for the lead in rebounds, pulling down eight. Michelle Curry netted 11 points to round out the top scorers for the Highlanders. She has scored in double-digits in the last three games for UCR.

The Highlanders combined for a strong shooting effort, making 41.3 percent of their shots to the Matadors' 32.3 percent. UCR was just two-makes away from perfection at the charity stripe, making good on 11 of 13 attempts.

CSUN was led by the fifth leading scorer in the conference Ashley Guay with 15 points. She was accompanied by Cinnamon Lister and Janae Sharpe with 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Highlanders battled under the boards with the Matadors, barely losing the rebounding battle 43-40 to the tall lineup from CSUN.

The Highlanders will be back in action in the SRC Arena Thursday, Feb. 5 against Cal State Fullerton. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
