Volleyball Wins Record-Setting Match With 3-0 Sweep Of UC Santa Barbara

Riverside, CA—Riverside--The UC Riversdie Volleyball Team made history Saturday evening, winning its fifth Big West match of the season in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-21) sweep of visiting UC Santa Barbara. That broke the program record for most conference wins in a season since the Highlanders made the move to Division I fifteen years ago. It also moved UC Riverside into a tie for sixth place in the Big West standings as they equaled CSUN's mark of 5-9.

The Highlanders five wins in Big West play are the most in program history, and the win is the second sweep of a Big West opponent, which is also a UCR Division I record.

Helena Peric continued her strong play as she led the Highlanders with 18 kills, followed by Fabiana Rosas with nine, and Alex Gresham with eight. UCR also got strong performances from Maddie Hubbell with 28 digs, and Chelsea Doyle, who had 41 assists and 8 digs in the victory.

UC Santa Barbara (7-17, 3-10) was led by Jaylen Villanueva's 10 kills, and Emilia Petrachi with 22 assists.

UCR (10-17, 5-9) jumped out to a 15-11 lead in the first, and still led 18-12 when the Gauchos called their second timeout the set. The Highlanders responded by winning seven out of ten points to take the set, 25-15. Helena Peric had nine first-set kills, and Chelsea Doyle tallied 13 assists to lead the Highlander attack.

The second set saw the Highlanders continue to dominate the match. Midway through the second set tied at 17-17, UCR scored two straight points to create slim margin that they would maintain throughout the set. Peric, Alex Gresham and Fabiana Rosas had four kills apiece in the second set, 25-23, and help UCR take a commanding two sets to none lead in the match.

The third and final set played out the same as the first two, with UCR jumping out to a 13-8 lead on the strength of kills from Rosas and Peric. The Highlanders lead 19-13, when the Gauchos won five out seven points to get the match to 21-18, but UC Riverside would close out the third set 25-21, and the match 3-0 for their fifth conference win.

The Highlanders play two matches next week, Friday, November 20 at CSUN, and Saturday, November 21, which is senior night at home against Long Beach State. Both mathes begin at 7:00 pm PT.
