Box Score Riverside— The UCR Women's Volleyball Team (9-17, 4-9) was looking to pick up a victory against Cal Poly (18-6, 10-3) Friday, but the Cal Poly Mustangs got 9 kills from Adlee Van Winden and 7 a piece from three others, en route to a 3 sets to none victory over the Highlanders.
UCR was lead by Helena Peric's 11 kills, 6 from Alexis Urbach, while Chelsea Doyle contributed with 30 assists and 11 digs.
The first set began with the teams trading points before the Mustangs created a seven point margin 15-8 on the strength of winning seven of 10 points. As play continued, it was again fairly even as the score reached 20-15, still in favor of visiting Cal Poly. Adlee Van Winden had 2 timely kills to lead the Mustangs to five straight points to closeout the first 25-15.
The Highlanders had a 9-8 lead early in the second set, before Cal Poly ran off six points in a row to seize control of the set, and lead 14-9. UCR got as close as three points at 20-17, but the Mustangs countered with a 5-3 run to take the set 25-20.
The third set started out tightly contested with ties at 4, 6, and 8 points apiece. The Mustangs created a six-point margin, 16-10, and looked to take control of third frame. The Highlanders would get no closer than five points, trailing 20-15. Cal Poly then won five out of six points to take third set 25-16 and the match 3 sets to none.
The Highlanders are back at it again Saturday, November 14, as they host the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 pm PT.
