Crain Scores A Season-High 29 In 81-61 Win Over CSU Bakersfield

Box Score Riverside—Brittany Crain scored a season-high 29 points to lead the UC Riverside Women's Basketball team to its fifth win of the season. A 28-8 second quarter helped the Highlanders (5-4) create distance that the Roadrunners (1-9) could not close, as they went on to win 81-61.

CSU Bakersfield jumped out to a 17-12 first quarter lead, aided by the Highlanders shooting just 25 percent from the field. The Roadrunners shot 37.5 percent in the first period, and went two of five from three point range.

In the second quarter the Highlanders found their shooting stroke, going 10-14 from the floor, 2-2 from long distance and a perfect 6-6 at the free-throw line. Crain was also perfect in period, shooting 4-4, with a three-pointer and two free-throws for 11 second quarter points.

UCR also picked up the defensive pressure, and held CSU Bakersfield to just 1-12 shooting, 8.3 percent in the frame. They outscored the visitors 28-8 in the second quarterfive of the Roadrunners eight points came at the charity stripe.

At the half UCR led 40-25, behind Crain's 17 points and Rejane Verin's 10. Erika Williams led CSU Bakersfield with 8 points at the half on 3-7 shooting.

At the 9:23 mark in the fourth, UCR had their biggest lead of the game at 66-42, but the Roadrunners would outscore them 10-4 to get the score to 70-52 with six minutes to play.

The Highlanders would again push the lead back up to 24 and the Roadrunners would not get any closer than 18, as UC Riverside held on for the 81-61 victory.

Crain's 29 led the Highlanders, who got 18 from Verin, and 14 from Michelle Curry. They were without the services of senior guard, and third leading scorer, Annelise Ito, who was hobbled by an ankle injury.

The Roadrunners were led by Bebe Zempare and Alyssa Shannon, with 12 points apiece.

The UC Riverside Women's team heads to the northwest for three games, The first one is against Oregon on Tuesday, December 15 at 5 pm PT, followed a pair of games in Seattle against the Washington Huskies and Seattle University.
