Box Score Riverside- The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team dropped just it second home game of the season after falling to Hawai'i, 72-69 Thursday evening.
The Highlanders struggled in the first half offensively, making just 14 of 37 attempts from the field and two of nine from behind the arc. Defensively, UC Riverside forced eight turnovers, and converting the 'Bows miscues into nine points in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Highlanders 100 percent free-throw contributed to their 34-31 lead going into halftime.
Leading the offense effort for the Highlanders was Simone DeCoud, putting up 22 points to match her season-high. DeCoud was perfect from the charity stripe, making good on five attempts and draining three of her six three-point shots.
Four other Highlanders contributed double-digits points on the night. Freshman Michelle Curry boasts a six game streak in double-digit scoring with 17 points. She also handed out a game-high tying five assists. The fourth leading scorer in the nation, Brittany Crain, moved her double-digit scoring streak to 33 games, registering 16 points, taking just 16 shot attempts in 40 minutes of play. Annelise Ito rounded out the leading scorers with 10 points.
From start to finish, the second half was a back and forth battle. Hawai'i tied the game three times in the first five and a half minutes of the second half before taking over the lead on a good three-pointer by Briana Harris. The 'Bows' pushed their lead to eight with 3:40 left on the clock but a string of made free-throws by DeCoud and a made jumper by Curry would bring the Highlanders within one with a minute left. Last second fouls would put Hawai'i led to two made free-throws with 11 seconds remaining. The Highlanders attempted one more three-pointer that would rattle just off the rim as time expired.
Connie Morris and Megan Huff led Hawai'i offense, scoring 12 points each. Briana Harris and Ashleigh Karaitiana also contributed offensively, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. Hawai'i owned the board for 40 straight minutes pulling down 47 rebounds to UC Riverside's 25.
The Highlanders are back in action and on the road Saturday, February 14. Tip is set for 2 pm PT.
