Pullman, WA—Angel Landazuri, Jordan Kron and Gabe Gentner combined to alowed just five hits Friday evening at Washington State, but the Cougars strung together enough of them to walk away with a 3-0 victory.
WSU didn't collect its first hit off of Landazuri until the bottom of the third when Shane Matheny doubled down the left field line, but Jack Strunc flied out to center and Derek Chapman popped up to second to keep the Cougars off the board.
PJ Jones reached on an error to start the bottom of the fourth, but Landazuri retired the next three batters stranding Jones.
Washington State threatened in the bottom of the fifth as well getting a lead off single from Wes Leow and a one-out walk from Matheney, but once again, Landazuri (1-1) worked out of the jam.
Meanwhile, Cougars starter Joe Pistorese (1-1) gave up just two hits through his first six innings as the game remained scoreless.
That changed in the bottom of the sixth as Jones drew a walk to start the inning and moved to second on an Ian Sagdal sacrifice bunt. After Ben Roberts flied out to right, Jones advanced to third on a passed ball, and Cameron Frost's double to left center put Washington State on top, 1-0.
Kron took over for Landazuri to start the seventh, and his throwing error allowed McDowell to reach first, but he retired the next three batters to keep it a 1-0 game.
Pistorese was lifted to start the top of the eighth in favor of Sam Triece, and almost immediately, the Highlanders mounted their best scoring threat of the evening. Robby Witt singled up the middle to start the frame, and Mark Contreras singled to center to move Witt into scoring position. Casey Henderson sacrificed both runners up 90 feet with a bunt, and Vince Fernandez was called on to pinch hit for Austin Colvin.
Matt Bower took over for Triece on the mound and struck out Fernandez before intentionally walking Joe Chavez. Dante Chupek pinch hit for Drake Zarate, but he struck out looking to end the inning.
The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on a Frost RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Matheny
Ian Hamilton came on in relief in the ninth for Washington State and gave up a one-out single to Jordan Abernathy, but Alex Rubanowitz grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
The Highlanders and Cougars play game three of their four games series on Saturday beginning at 3 pm PT.
