Baseball Takes Rubber Match From Tulane, 6-2

Box Score Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team picked up a 6-2 win over Tulane Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of the Highlanders three-game series with the Green Wave.

UCR jumped out on top for the third straight game plating a single run in the bottom of the first. Joe Chavez was hit by a pitch with one out. and moved to second on Drake Zarate's single up the middle. Mark Contreras followed with a single back up the box scoring Chavez.

UC Riverside (10-13) tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Mark Contreras' single up the middle  with the bases loaded scored Chavez and Fernandez.

Highlanders starter Keaton Leach (2-2) kept the Green Wave (17-7) off the board until the top of the sixth. Hunter Williams led off the inning with a single to left, and Lex Kaplan hit his second home run of the series barely clearing the right field fence cutting the lead to one.

UC Riverside got one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI single my Matthew Ellis. Adonis Morrison laced a one out double to right, moved to third on a Cody Sporrer ground out to second, and scored in Ellis' single to right center.

The Highlanders added a pair of insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Ellis led off the inning with a triple to left center and scored on Vince Fernandez's ground out to second. Joe Chavez ended the scoring ripping his first home run of the season over the WABA Grill sign in left field.

Leach retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to record the Highlanders first complete game since March 14, 2014 when Jake Smigelski went nine against Sontybrook.

Tim Yanel (2-1) took the loss for Tulane.

UC Riverside concludes its nine-game home stand with a pair of midweek games vs. Oregon. Tuesday's first pitch is slated for 6 pm PT, and Wednesday's game begins at 3 pm.
