CSUN Baseball Scores Pair In Bottom Of Ninth For 10-9 Win Over Highlanders

Northridge, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team battled back from a two-run deficit to take a 9-8 lead into the ninth, but CSUN loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, and then drew a pair of walks to bring home the tying and game-winning runs.
AJ Sawyer's two-run home run to left center in the top of the seventh turned an 8-6 deficit into a tie ballgame, and Alex Rubanowitz's RBi single in the top of the eighth put the Highlanders up one.
Jared Morton (1-2), who pitched a scoreless eighth for UC Riverside (13-28, 2-10), came on for his second inning of work in the bottom of the ninth. Justin Toerner began the inning with a single through the right side, and Morton plunked Nolan Bumstead to put runners on first and second. Yusuke Akitoshi tried to sacrifice the runners over, but Mark Contreras threw out Toerner at third for the first out of the inning.
Nick Murphy laced the first pitch he saw to left field to load the bases, and Head Coach Troy Percival brought in Matthew Ellis to stem the tide. Ellis' first four pitches to Chester Pak were off the mark, though, scoring pinch runner Nolan Flashman with the tying run. Ellis then ran a full count on Albee Weiss, but his final offering missed the strike zone, scoring Akitoshi with the game winner.
Sawyer drove in four runs on the day with a double to go along with his seventh-inning homer, while Contreras paced the Highlanders with three hits out of the lead off spot. Bumstead drove in half of the Matadors' 10 runs with his three hits.
Joe Ryan (2-0) was credited with the victory after pitching a scoreless top of the ninth for CSUN.
The Highlanders remain on the road on Tuesday as they head to UNLV for a 3:05 pm PT first pitch with the Rebels.
