LMU Holds On For 5-4 Win Over UCR Baseball

Los Angeles, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team led 4-1 through four-and-a-half innings of play Tuesday evening at LMU, but the Lions rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth and held on for a 5-4 victory.
Rain delayed the start of the game for nearly an hour, but UCR got its offense going early as Cody Sporrer knocked in a pair of runs in the top of the third, and Joe Chavez drove one in in the fourth to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.
Joie Dunyon allowed just two hits through his first three innings of work, but the third hit he gave up put the Lions on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Jimmy Jack homered down the right field line. UC Riverside (10-23) got the run back in the top of the fifth thanks to an LMU (20-13) miscue that allowed Mark Contreras to score.
Dunyon walked the lead off hitter in the bottom of the fifth, and Head Coach Troy Percival made the call to the bullpen. Max Compton came on in relief and recorded the first out of the inning on a sacrifice bunt, but he loaded the bases two batters later thanks to a walk and a hit batter.
That brought Jesus Gonzalez (1-3) out of the pen, but he walked the first batter he faced to cut the Highlanders lead to 4-2. The next hitter, Tanner Donnels lifted a fly ball to right. Robby Witt made the catch for the second out of the inning, crashing into the wall in the process. By the time he collected himself, two runs had scored, tying the game at four. David Edwards followed with a single to center to put the Lions on top.
Matthew Ellis threw two innings of perfect relief in the sixth and seventh, and Jared Morton pitched a scoreless eighth to keep the Highlanders in the game, but the team's offense managed just two hits over the final five-plus innings as they lost for the tenth straight game.
UC Riverside remains on the road this week with a Wednesday evening, 6 pm PT game at San Diego.
