Baseball Drops Final Game Of Three-Game Series To Hawai'i, 9-2

Riverside—The Hawai'i Baseball Team completed a three-game Big West Conference sweep of the Highlanders Saturday evening with a 9-2 victory over UC Riverside.

The Highlanders (13-35, 2-16) fell behind early in the first two games of the series, but UCR jumped out on top Saturday thanks to AJ Sawyer's single to left in the first which scored Vince Fernandez.

UC Riverside starter Antonio Gonzales (0-1) retired the first six batters he faced, and it remained a 1-0 Highlanders lead into the third. The Rainbow Warriors strung together three singles and a sac bunt in the top of the third, and were helped along by a UCR miscue to take a 3-1 lead.

The Highlanders got one run back in the bottom of the third thanks to a Cody Sporrer RBI single, and Gonzales kept Hawai'i off the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth to keep it a one run game.

All that changed in the top of the seventh though, as the first four batters reached base, putting the Rainbow Warriors up 5-2. Hawai'i (21-26, 12-9) scored two more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to secure the 9-2 victory.

Kyle Von Ruden (2-3) picked up the win tossing 5.1 innings of shutout relief, scattering three hits and walking one.

The Highlanders remain at home this week with a Wednesday, May 13 vs. San Diego. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT at The Plex.
