Box Score Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team welcomed San Diego to the Plex Wednesday evening, trying to end an eight-game losing skid, but it was the Toreros collecting 10 hits en route to a 5-1 victory.
The Highlanders fell behind 1-0 in the first as the Toreros were able to put four runners on base including a scary hit by pitch. With two outs, two runners on, and oen run already in, UCR starter Jesus Gonzalez came in too high and tight with a fastball to Colton Waltner, hitting the sophomore in the left ear flap. Waltner stayed down for a minute, being tended to by the San Diego Sports Medicine staff, eventually getting up under his own power. Hunter Mercado-Hood pinch ran for Waltner and remained in the game in right field.
Gonzalez got out of the jam, and pitched a scoreless second, and in the Highlanders half of the frame, Joe Chavez tied the score with a solo shot to left center.
It didn't stay tied for long, however, as in the top of the third, Mercado-Hood doubled to right center to score Jesse Jenner, and Ben Wylly plated a pair as his shot to right center cleared the fence putting the Toreros up, 4-1.
It remained a three-run lead through six innings, as Gonzalez gave way to Gabe Gentner after three innings, and San Diego starter Jonathan Teaney handed the ball over to Daniel Reitzler to start the fifth. The Toreros tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as their relief corps kept the Highlanders off the board the rest of the way.
UC Riverside makes its way to Cal Poly this weekend for their penultimate Big West series of the season.
