San Jose, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team opened its 2015 season with a 3-1 victory over Weber State Friday morning in the first match of the San Jose State Invitational for both clubs.
The Wildcats eked out the win in the first set, 25-23, as neither team team led by more than four points. The second set was even closer with neither team leading by more than three points, but the Highlanders closed things out by winning three straight to tie the match at one set apiece.
A 7-3 run midway through set number three helped UC Riverside cruise to a 25-20 win as they never trailed in the period. The Highlanders never trailed in the fourth either as they rattled off four straight late in the stanza to secure the win.
Alex Gresham and Fabiana Rosas each had 11 kills to pace UCR, while Chelsea Doyle recorded 35 assists in her first match for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders take on host San Jose State this evening at 7 pm as they try to improve to 2-0 on the year for the first time since 2012.
