Box Score Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team was looking to snap a four-game losing skid Thursday evening, but visiting Hawai'i had four players scored in double figures leading the Rainbow Warriors to a 80-71 victory.
Both team's offenses were clicking early in the first half with shooting percentages hovering around 50-percent for both squads. The Highlanders (9-10, 0-3) went cold over the final eight minutes, though, making three of 12 to close out the period. Hawai'i (14-2, 3-0) finished the period making 48.5 percent of their shots, and owned the paint, outscoring UCR 22-12. Nine Highlanders turnovers also led to a 9-2 advantage in points off turnovers for the Rainbow Warriors, all of which gave Hawai'i a 40-27 halftime lead.
The four-man combination of Quincy Smith, Mike Thomas, Stefan Jankvoic and Isaac Fleming went 15 for 24 for 36 of Hawai'i's first-half points, with Smith's 13 leading the way. Jaylen Bland paced the Highlanders at the intermission with eight points, while Secean Johnson added six.
It remained a double-digit lead for much of the second half, and with 9:35 to go, Taylor Johns picked up his fifth foul, sending him to the bench. Stefan Jankovic made both free throws to extend the Hawai'i advantage back out to 13, but that is when the Highlanders began to make their move.
Bland scored five straight points to reduce the lead under double figures for the first time since the first half, 58-50. A pair of Alex Larsson free throws made it a six point lead, and after a Mike Thomas free throw, Johnson converted on a layup to make it a 59-54 ballgame. That was as close as the Highlanders would get however, as Hawai'i held on for the nine-point win.
Smith, Thomas, Jankovic and Fleming combined to score 62 of the Rainbow Warriors 80 points. Thomas was one rebound shy of a double-double.
The Highlanders are on the road this Saturday as they travel to CSUN for a 7:30 pm PT tip against the Matadors
