Second Quarter Run Propels Women To, 78-60, Win Over Long Beach State

Long Beach—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (10-7,3-0) used a, 16-0, second quarter run to take control of the game en route to a, 78-60, victory over Long Beach State. (video highlights)

Tied 20-20 early in the second period, UCR got five straight points from Simone DeCoud and a jumper from Rejane Verin that ignited the Highlanders to a 16-0 run that put a distance between the teams that would not be closed.

The run lasted for five minutes, with the Beach finally scoring from the free throw line to bring their scoring drought to an end. They were held to 37 percent shooting in the period and forced into seven turnovers, which UCR converted into 10 points in the quarter.

In their previous game, Long Beach State (12-5,1-2) connected on 20-of-36 three pointers. Wednesday night they were 3-of-12, just 25 percent from long distance through two quarters.

UCR shot 4-of-6 from deep in the first half and was led by Verin's 20 points. Annelise Ito had six points, six rebounds, and five assists at the break.

A quartet of 49ers found their way to five points, but the team's leading scorer, Raven Benton, was held scoreless in the first half.

With 4:56 to play in the third leading by 22, the Highlanders scored six straight points for game's largest lead, 28, at 59-31. The Beach responded with a run of their own, 12-3, to trail, 62-43, heading into the fourth and final period.

Verin scored eight points in the fourth, as the Highlanders would go on for the, 78-60, victory.

Verin recorded her fourth double double of the season with a career-high 34 points on 14-of-22 shooting, to go along with 10 rebounds.(post-game interview)

Ito flirted with a triple double, scoring 18 points, pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds, and dishing out six assists.

Chanterria Jackson led the 49ers with 17 points.

UC Riverside has won four games in a row, three straight in the Big West, and will be looking for their fourth Saturday night, when they travel to Hawai'I to face the Rainbow Wahine in a 9 pm PT tip.
