Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets At #13 Hawai'i

Manoa,HI—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team fell in straight sets to #13 Hawai'i in their second Big West conference match of the 2016 season.
In the opening set, the Highlanders traded points with the Rainbow Wahine and the clubs were tied at 11 apiece. Hawai'i then created a three-point margin at 15-12, before closing out the set on a 10-3 run to take the first set 25-15.
The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a 15-5 lead early in the second set, and went on to take the second frame 25-6.
The third set saw UCR play its most competitive set of the match. Trailing 23-13, they ran off three straight points to make it 23-16. The Rainbow Wahine scored next to setting up match point, when freshman Leanne Newell had a kill to extend the match. The island hosts would clinch the set, 25-17 and the match 3-0 on the last of UCR's 27 attack errors on the night.
Meg Graham led the Highlanders with five kills and a pair of blocks. Mickayla Sherman also logged five kills. Cristina Maietta had 10 digs and three blocks to lead the UCR defense, while Maddie Hubbell added nine digs.
Hawai'i was led Nikki Taylor, who had eight kills, six digs and eight blocks.
The UC Riverside Volleyball Team returns to Southern California for the home opener against Long Beach State Wednesday October 5th at 7pm on the newly designed SRC Arena floor.
