Riverside—Simone DeCoud scored a season-high 18 points, and knocked down a career-high tying five three-pointers in the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team's, 58-54, victory over Seattle U at the SRC Arena.
The Highlanders entered the fourth period leading, 48-41, and appeared to be on their way to improving their record to 3-0 when taking a lead into the final 10 minutes.
Seattle then scored the first four points of the period to make it a one possession game, before DeCoud connected from long distance to push the Highlander margin up to six at, 51-45.
The Redhawks would hold UCR scoreless in the midst of a, 7-0, run that lasted four and half minutes, and gave them their first lead of the second half at, 52-51, with 3:16 to play.
Michelle Curry scored in the lane on consecutive trips down the floor to retake the lead, 55-54, with Seattle getting a Kaylee Best score in between.
With just 1:52 to play, both teams misfired on multiple attempts. The Redhawks went 0-2 from distance, and DeCoud missed a pair of jumpers.
Réjane Vérin then got fouled on her way to the bucket, and sank the first of two free-throws with 10 seconds remaining. Seattle corralled the rebound off the miss and called for time trailing, 56-54.
The Redhawks were drove to the basket, but DeCoud was in defensive position, and took an elbow to the face for an offensive foul.
On the ensuing possession, she was intentionally fouled. The senior stepped to the line and calmly knocked down two free-throws to seal the Highlander victory, 58-54.
Vérin nearly tallied a double-double with 10 points and nine boards, while Curry chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds in the win. DeCoud added four steals and eight rebounds of her own to go with her team-leading 18 points Saturday.
Alexis Montgomery led Seattle with 22 points.
The Highlanders begin a stretch of six straight on the road to the end the year, beginning at CSU Bakersfield Wednesday at 7 pm.
