Men's Basketball Falls At Buzzer, 50-49, To UC Davis
2/6/2016 10:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team battled back from eight points down with 2:46 to go Saturday evening, taking the lead on a pair of Malik Thames' free throws with eight seconds on the clock. But Brynton Lemar's 10-foot jumper dropped cleanly through the net with tenths of a second remaining to give visiting UC Davis the 50-49 victory.
Neal Monson's lay up with under three minutes to go capped a 20-4 Aggies (10-12, 5-4) run that turned an eight-point UCR lead into an eight--point Davis advantage.
Secean Johnson's lay up with 2:11 to go made it a six-point game, and Taylor Johns made one of two free throws to slice the lead to five. Another Johnson lay up pulled the Highlanders to within three, 48-45 with 1:38 on the clock, and Johns hit two more free throws with 36 seconds left to cut it to one. Thames was fouled on UC Riverside's next possession, and made both free throws to send the home crowd into a frenzy.
The Aggies inbounded the ball after the second free throw and raced down court. The ball ended up in Lemar's hands, and he drove to the left of the lane sending a jumper floating towards the basket as time ran down. It fell through the hoop unscathed, and the Highlanders (13-13, 4-6) were unable to get off a shot as time expired.
Johns finished the game with 16 points, thanks in part to an eight-of-10 effort from the free throw line. As a team, UC Riverside made 19 of 25 shots from the charity stripe to stay in the game as the Highlanders made only 27.7 shots from the field on the night.
Defense ruled both sides of the ledger in the first half as neither team shot better than 26 percent from the floor. UC Davis turned things around after the break connecting on 12 of 25 shots over the final 20 minutes of play.
Josh Fox led the Aggies with 16 points, while Lemar added 13. Monson grabbed a game-high dozen rebounds.
The Highlanders remain at home next week as they host Cal Poly on Saturday, November 13 on Fox Prime Ticket. Tip is slated for 7:30 pm PT.
