Baseball Scores Two In Seventh But Falls, 4-3, At Portland

Trailed, 4-1, After Rain Suspended Game In Fifth Saturday

Portland, OR--The UC Riverside Baseball Team trailed Portland, 4-1, Saturday before rain suspended the game in the fifth inning. The teams resumed play Sunday at noon, and the Highlanders scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but could get no closer as the Pilots won their third straight over UCR, 4-3

Portland pitcher Jordan Horak (2-0) got the start Saturday, and struck out eight in five innings while allowing just one hit and one unearned run. His offense staked him to a 4-1 lead, with Caleb Whalen driving in three of the four runs.

UC Riverside (4-7) scored its first run in the fourth thanks to a pair of Pilots (8-3) miscues. Just over an inning later, the rains came and the umpires called for the tarp suspending the game.

The Highlanders closed to within one in the top of the seventh, once again taking advantage of a Portland error. Consecutive singles by Colby Schultz, Casey Worden and Mark Contreras made it a 4-2 ball game, and a throwing error by the Pilots' shortstop on a Vince Fernandez grounder cut the lead to one.

UC Riverside put runners on second and third in the top of the eighth, but stranded them both. They also put the lead off runner in the ninth, but Bill Sahlinger recorded the final out for his fifth save of the season.

Ricky Delgado (0-2) took the loss allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings, and Jacob Worrell pitched 3.1 inning of one-hit, scoreless relief.

The Highlanders and Pilots complete their four game series Sunday afternoon.
