Baseball Drops Rubber Match At UC Irvine, 8-3
4/10/2016 4:01:00 PM | Baseball
Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team had hopes of picking up its second straight conference series victory, but UC Irvine scored seven runs in the first four innings en route to an 8-3 victory
Hazahel Quidada (0-1) got the start for the Highlanders, but he retired just one of the first five batters he faced before being lifted in favor of Angel Landazuri. Two of those batter scored in the inning, and UC Riverside found itself trailing 2-0 after the first.
Michael Farris cut the lead in half in the top of the second with an RBI double to center that scored Cody Sporrer.
Landazuri retired the Anteaters (18-10, 3-3) in order in the bottom of the second, but in the third, they touched him for a single run, and in the fourth they plated four more to take a 7-1 lead.
UC Riverside (13-17, 3-3) got two runs back in the fifth thanks to a Sporrer triple to left that plated Colby Schultz and Drake Zarate, but that was all the offense the Highlanders could generate.
UC Irvine tacked on a single run in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin of victory.
Alonza Garcia (2-2) got credit for the win tossing 3.2 innings of one hit baseball in relief, while striking out six.
The Highlanders travel to Utah this weekend for a three-game series against the Utes beginning Friday, April 15 at 6 pm PT.
